        CITY NEWS

If you missed the TOQUERVILLE 150TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION at our beautiful Park on Ash Creek and around our Historic Town, it was a great, eventful and fun-filled time for everyone; coordinated by our 150th Committee with the annual Pioneer Day Celebration.

City Council sends a big THANK YOU to all those Toquerville residents (and any assistants) who helped make the big weekend such a success.
We are aware of the time spent and dedication of so many, from City Council planning and preparations (Paul Heideman’s 150th Committee) beginning last year anticipating such an event, to the culminating weekend of July 24th to 26th;     Van Kleinman headed this Committee.

At the beginning of 2008, a contest for residents submitting designs of a Memorial City Pin and T-Shirt commenced; you may see these on our cityoftoquerville.com website.  The winning shirt became a combination of several ideas, along with three different winners for the pin design and our official City Pin, all showing the 150th dates.  We can report the shirts ordered are 400+, pins are at 570+, and we are still selling pins at the City Office along with orders for shirts. We are proud to have the newly published Cherie Naegle History of Toquerville for purchase; the previous Wes Larsen Toquerville series is also still available at the Office – 635-1094.

The City Council decided to make this part of the Pioneer Day Celebration weekend, beginning with an old-fashion “sleep-out” on family lawns throughout the Town.  Our annual Parade began at
8AM, honoring two of our senior residents: Mary Alice Hunter and Dixie Heideman. We paid tribute and honored current and past City Mayors, Bishops and Princess Royalties riding on some neat cars and floats down the old “lower street”; enjoyment and memories were shared with many who attended from some distance.

The traditional breakfast (provided by our LDS Church Wards) was followed by the musical program and hometown talent; we heard our new “Toquerville” song composed by Bent Lindhardt.  Our 2008 Toquerville Princess, Megan Manwaring and her Court, Dacey Elison (1st Attend.), and Jessica Beatty (2nd Attend.) participated in the Program and with children’s games. The new horseshoe and picnic area had a tournament with great competition.

Thanks to all who wore costumes and / or played host to those on walking tours of the historic homes, local hikes and “geo-caching”.  Guides took groups on 4-wheel rides to the “Towers”, “Nephi’s Twist”, and “Devils Hole”. There were GREAT family displays at the Town Hall and a Cemetery tour; children’s rodeo with pigs and chickens; an outdoor movie at the City Offices; all culminating at a City Park family dance with our own local DJ, Larry Bennett.

You may have missed the water fight about 2PM, as many of us made that decision, but we hope you did not miss the historic displays at the old renovated Town Hall, and the “Dutch Oven Dinner”, it was fantastic!  A big thanks to Wes Cannon and ALL the cooks and organizers that performed such a feat, feeding over 500 people attending – Dutch ovens from everywhere!

We hope we have not forgotten to thank anyone, if so please accept our apology. THANKS AGAIN to all who helped, also to all who attended – it would not have been a success if no one showed up!

Mayor Ken Powell ______________________________,
Council Members:
Lynn Olds, Randy Scott, Darrin LeFevre, Paul Heideman and Daren Cottam.
